Middle East Technical University is founded in 1956 to contribute to the development of Turkey and especially to train people so as to create a skilled workforce in the fields of natural and social sciences. In 1963, the University moved to its current campus location which is the first university campus of Turkey.
Today, the University is proud to employ about 750 faculty (professors, associates professors etc.), 400 academic instructors and 1,250 research assistants. It is a great pleasure to offer education to over 26,000 students. The total number of the alumni now is above 114,000.
METU became the first and only university in Turkey to enter the “World’s Top 100 Universities” list according to the “World University Rankings 2014-2015”, released by the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE).The THE World University Rankings, powered by Thomson Reuters, rate universities worldwide on thirteen performance indicators grouped into five areas, including “Teaching”, “Research”, “Citations”, “Industry Income”, and “International Outlook”. METU, which is the highest ranked university, in the 85th, among the world’s best 400 universities, has demonstrated once again that it is a university, recognized nationally and internationally for its academic quality. In the “World Reputation Rankings”, released by the Times Higher Education in 2012, 2013, and 2014, METU had also been accredited as the first and only university in Turkey to enter the “World’s Top 100 Universities” list.
