Right in front of the Department of Mathematics there is a statue of a “Science Girl” made by the sculptor Hakki Karayigitoglu. According to the legends told on the campus it is a statue of a remarkably successful student who managed to accomplish the Department of Mathematics and Physics simultaneously and in three and a half year. The legend tells that tragically the girl dies in a car accident on her way to the graduation ceremony. The Department of Mathematics decides to honor her memory as an example of an outstanding student. This statue is probably one of the most favorite statues of METU students. In cold and snowy winter days the statue is always covered with a scarf in order to keep the “Science Girl” warm.
