Gender and Women's Studies Graduate Programme at Middle East Technical University (METU) was established in February 1994 under a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funded project to the Directorate General on the Status and Problems of Women of the Government of Turkey.

The main feature of the program is its interdisciplinary structure. Both academic stuff and the students coming from different academic backgrounds give the program a unique and privileged richness. Faculty members of the Gender and Women's Studies Graduate Programme coming from different departments like Sociology, Psychology, Political Sciences, History, Public and Business administration are nationally and internationally qualified experts conducted in years of researches in the field of women's studies. Since the establishment of the program, students with bachelor degrees like Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy, American Culture and Literature, English Language and Literature, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Industrial Engineering and others have been accepted. The student profile dwells on the aim of gaining an education in gender topics, combining this knowledge with the experiences of their study fields and contributing to the development of a multidimensional approach to gender and women's studies.

Gender and Women's Studies Graduate Programme at Middle East Technical University offers thesis and non-thesis programs. From its establishment, the program honored 40 students, 23 thesis and 17 non-thesis, with Master's degree.
